Wedding Invitation Etiquette

Getting married and getting ready to choose your invitations? To ensure your invitations are well-received and to help you get as much success with your RSVPS as possible, here are our top tips for Wedding Invitation Etiquette:

Timing

Ideally, your invitations should be sent out at least 6-8 weeks before your wedding date. This should allow ample time for guests to make travel and accommodation arrangements. If, however, you’re getting married during a particularly busy seasonal period such as Christmas, you may wish to send these out as early as 3 months in advance. If you’re having a destination wedding, it’s recommended that you send out a save the date at least six months (ideally up to a year) before your wedding date to let everyone know, with an invitation to follow around 3-4 months before the big day.

Addressing the invitations:

Make sure to correctly address each invitation, including the full names of the recipient and their spouse or partner, if applicable. If you don’t know the names of plus ones, it’s generally acceptable to add “and guest” to the invitation. Be very clear about who exactly is invited. If you’re inviting a couple and are not inviting children, the invitation should be addressed to “Mr and Mrs Doe” only, for example.

Inner and outer envelopes:

You should use an inner and outer envelope for a formal invitation. The inner envelope will hold the invitation only, while the outer envelope holds the invitation and any additional information on separate cards.

RSVP:

Include an RSVP card with a response deadline, and make sure to follow up with any guests who haven't responded by the deadline. Make sure to give your guests an RSVP date of at least 2-3 weeks before your big day!
